  1. Structural Racism and Health Disparities: Reconfiguring the Social Determinants of Health Framework to Include the Root Cause.Ruqaiijah Yearby - 2020 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 48 (3):518-526.
The government recognizes that social factors cause racial inequalities in access to resources and opportunities that result in racial health disparities. However, this recognition fails to acknowledge the root cause of these racial inequalities: structural racism. As a result, racial health disparities persist.

The Social Determinants of Health, Health Disparities, and Health Justice.Ruqaiijah Yearby - 2022 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 50 (4):641-649.
Although the federal government and several state governments have recognized that structural discrimination limits less privileged groups’ ability to be healthy, the measures adopted to eliminate health disparities do not address structural discrimination. Historical and modern-day structural discrimination in employment has limited racial and ethnic minority individuals’ economic conditions by segregating them to low wage jobs that lack benefits, which has been associated with health disparities. Health justice provides a community-driven approach to transform the government’s efforts to eliminate health disparities, (...)

INTRODUCTION: What is Health Justice?Lindsay F. Wiley, Ruqaiijah Yearby, Brietta R. Clark & Seema Mohapatra - 2022 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 50 (4):636-640.
Health justice is both a community-led movement for power building and transformational change and a community-oriented framework for health law scholarship. Health justice is distinguished by a distinctively social ethic of care that reframes the relationship between health care, public health, and the social determinants of health, and names subordination as the root cause of health inequities.

Involuntary Consent: Conditioning Access to Health Care on Participation in Clinical Trials.Ruqaiijah A. Yearby - 2016 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 44 (3):445-461.
American bioethics has served as a safety net for the rich and powerful, often failing to protect minorities and the economically disadvantaged. For example, minorities and the economically disadvantaged are often unduly influenced into participating in clinical trials that promise monetary gain or access to health care. This is a violation of the bioethical principle of “respect for persons,” which requires that informed consent for participation in clinical trials is voluntary and free of undue influence. Promises of access to health (...)

  10. Against the Reification of Race in Bioethics: Anti-Racism without Racial Realism.Adam Hochman - 2021 - American Journal of Bioethics 21 (2):88-90.
The three target articles constitute a powerful and persuasive call for actively anti-racist bioethics and biomedicine. All three articles reject race as a biological category. Nevertheless, they share a common commitment to racial classification. At one point, Ruqaiijah Yearby writes that “social race, like biological race, is an illusion created to establish racial hierarchy,” but mostly she writes about “races” as though they were not an illusion, but a reality. In this commentary I critique the racial realism of (...)

The Resistance of Beauty.María del Rosario Acosta López - 2016 - Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy 21 (1):235-249.
In this article I address Schiller’s first response in his Kallias Briefe or Concerning the Beautiful, Letters to Gottfried Körner to Kant’s analysis of the beautiful in the first part of the Critique of Judgment. My main intention in the paper is to investigate Schiller’s emphasis on the notion of resistance (Widerstand) in his reading of Kant’s concept of beauty, and to ask how does this relate to Schiller’s own approach to aesthetics as an ethico-political realm. I am particularly interested (...)

Xenophanes the High Rationalist: The Case of F1:17-8.Scott F. Aikin - 2014 - Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy 19 (1):1-14.
Scholarship on Xenophanes’s F1 has had two foci, one on the rules of the symposium and the other on the religious program posed at its close. Thus far, the two areas of focus have been treated as either separate issues or as the religious program proposed in the service of the sympotic objectives. Instead, I will argue that the sympotic norms Xenophanes espouses are in the service of the broader program of rational theology.
